The plot and critical reception of Seven Men and a Destiny
Seven Men and a Destiny is an American western and action film, released in 2016. The feature is a project by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) and Nic Pizzolatto (True Detective).
The film is set in a small town in the American West, where residents are pressured by the wealthy, influential and violent Bartholomew Bogue to sell their land for ridiculous prices.
Representatives from several families in the city meet at the Church to decide how to deal with Bogue. The villain arrives unexpectedly and sets fire to the temple, killing anyone who defies his command.
The wife of one of the deceased travels to a nearby town in search of help, and witnesses a lone cowboy defeating a group of various thugs.
She approaches this mysterious stranger and begs for his help. Sam Chisolm, the cowboy, is not interested in the story until he hears the name Bogue – with whom he has personal business to settle.
Chisolm decides to embark for the besieged city along with 6 other men of great abilities.
Arriving at the scene, the Magnificent 7 finish off Bogue’s henchmen – and prepare for the villain’s return, who promises to return with a veritable army of bandits.
The film divided critics’ opinion. The cast’s performance, action sequences and soundtrack were praised, while the film’s script and pace received criticism.
Seven Men and a Destiny also established itself as a moderate box office hit, grossing $162 million with a production budget of $90 million.
